Suggested Activities:

• Bible:
- Focus on the kindness the men had for their friend.  So much kindness that they were willing to do whatever it took to get the man to Jesus so that he could be healed.  Discuss how you can be kind to others as well.

- Bee Attitude Printable In the top tier of the "Bee" Attitude worksheet, have the child write the attitude of the week. In the next tier, have the child draw a picture of the Bible story.  In the bottom tier, ask the child to draw a picture of himself having this attitude.

- Teaching Emotions Pause as you read a book or Bible story and allow the child to choose an emotion from Teaching Emotions worksheet based upon how the character is feeling at that moment in the story.

- Play "doctor" and talk about how only Jesus could command a lame person to get up and walk.

- God I Need to Talk to You About Bullying Read God, I Need to Talk to You About Bullying by Dan Carr

-
Let's Be Kind Read Let's Be Kind by P.K. Hallinan

• Math:
- See Gross Motor Skill Activity

- Sing "Ten in the Bed" (Traditional)
There were 10 in the bed and the little one said, "Roll over, roll over."
So they all rolled over and one fell out.
(Keep counting down as you sing until there is one in the bed and the little one says "Good night!")

Science:
-
Food Pyramid Worksheet  Discuss the My Plate worksheet.  ("My Plate" is the "Food Pyramid" in the layout of a plate.) Cut out pictures of various types of food.  Help the child create healthy meals by gluing the pictures of the food in the appropriate areas of the plate.  Create several meals.  You can do the same activity gluing food on a paper plate instead of the printable.  More information...

- Hawaiian Pizza is one of the best ways to show the breakdown of My Plate.  Using the printable, make a homemade pizza together discussing each ingredient.  When a category is used, color the section on the printable.
Pizza dough - grain (use whole wheat flour to make the dough and discuss how at least half of the grains should be from whole grain)
Tomato Sauce - vegetables
Cheese - dairy
Pineapple - fruit
Ham - protein

- Cloudy With a Change of Meatballs
As you read
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett discuss into which category each of the food falls.

• Social Science:
Taste -
- Cornsyrup Art Create a drawing with a black crayon.  Paint with a mixture of corn syrup (very little needed), water, and food coloring.  After drying you will have a beautiful stained-glass art piece.  (Thank you Betsy for this idea.)

- What part of the body do we use to taste things? Discuss the mouth and the tongue.

- Using different foods in your refrigerator and pantry, taste and discuss how some items don’t taste very good by themselves but how each is very important when making cookies, bread, casseroles, etc.  Example items:  flour, lemon juice, sugar, salad dressing. (Idea from Let's Learn About Magnificent Me)

- Draw letters and numbers on a cookie sheet using pudding.

- Have your child close their eyes or use a blindfold and guess what they are eating without looking.

- Using the same main ingredient, eat several different things and discuss the differences - applesauce, apple butter, dried apples, apple pie, apple cake, etc. Also eat different varieties of food - grapes, bread products, apples. (Idea from Let's Learn About Magnificent Me)

- This is a good time to discuss with your child that there are things that are okay to eat and things that are not okay.  It is also important to ask Mommy or Daddy for permission to eat anything given to you by a stranger.

- Food For Thought Read Food for Thought by Saxton Freymann to learn about shapes, colors, numbers, opposites and letters all through amazing and fun food creations.

• Letters:
Use the Uu Writing worksheet and for further learning check out the Letter U Activities.

• Numbers:
Write numbers 1-20.

• Literacy:
- This could be a date, time, season, or part of the day.
- The illustrations can help a reader figure out the setting.

• Book of the Week:
- Use this book to discuss the "Bee" Attitudes learned this far.
- Make your favorite Christmas cookie recipe.
- Study the sense of taste while reading this book.

Pragmatic Activity
Pragmatics is the study of language in a social setting.  Included in the 5 Year Curriculum are suggestions to help a child use language appropriately in social situations.  Select one or more of the example pages to discuss.

• Fine Motor Skills:
Cookies Make homemade cookies or bread to give away as an act of kindness.  While making the food, discuss with your child the liquids and solids that go into the recipe.

• Gross Motor Skills:
Ladder Jumping  Using painter's tape, tape 10 lines on the floor or lay 10 pool noodles approximately 2' apart to form ladder rungs.  Label the "top" line "10"; next line "9" on down to "1" on the "bottom" line.  Standing before the "10" line, jump with feet together over the ladder rungs saying the numbers as you progress down. Work very hard not to fall down.

• Visual Perception Skill:
Lacing is an excellent activity to improve fine motor skills and visual perception.  The child must use hand-eye coordination to move the string through the holes.  Create your own or purchase lacing books.  More ideas...
