Spring Seasonal Activities

Plant growing in a cup.

Plant Flowers or Seeds

Teach children how plants grow by planting flowers or vegetables in small pots or a garden. Watch them bloom as the season progresses.

Materials Needed:

  • Clear plastic cup
  • Potting soil
  • Seeds (such as flowers, beans, radishes, or grass)
  • Spray bottle or small cup of water
  • Marker (optional, for labeling)

Directions:

Prepare the Cup: Fill the clear plastic cup about two-thirds full with potting soil. Make sure the soil is loose and not packed too tightly.

Plant the Seeds: Push the seeds gently into the soil, about 1/2 inch deep, depending on the type of seed you're planting. Cover the seeds lightly with soil. If you'd like, use a marker to write the seed's name on the cup.

Water the Seeds: Use a spray bottle to lightly mist the soil or pour a small amount of water into the cup to moisten the soil without making it soggy.

Set By a Window: Choose a sunny window where the seed will receive plenty of light.

Care for the Seeds: Check the soil regularly to make sure it stays moist. Lightly spray with water when the soil begins to dry out.

Watch It Grow: Over the next few days or weeks, watch as the seeds sprout. Because the cup is clear, the child can observe the roots growing down and the stem growing up towards the light.

Take it Outside:  Once the plant(s) have grown large enough and the weather is warm enough, move them outside into the garden.

Spring Nature Scavenger Hunt

Create a list of spring items (like a bird, a flower, or a butterfly) for children to find outdoors. Discuss the colors of the items found.  This encourages observation skills and appreciation for God's Creation.  Gather a sampling of what you find to create a nature collage by gluing the items to a piece of spring-colored construction paper.

Go Bird Watching

Set up a bird feeder or take a walk to spot different types of birds. Discuss the colors and sizes of the birds.

For added fun, create binoculars to help you find the birds.  Paint two toilet paper rolls.  Staple together and add a string.

Child playing in puddles

Play in the Rain

This is nothing like jumping in puddles during or after a spring rain.  Yes, the child will get messy, but cause-and-effect play can't be beat.  Or take a stroll with an umbrella.  These are activities kids remember doing.
