As children grow in their reading abilities, books become a doorway to new ideas, adventures, and perspectives. The books on this page are favorites for children in 3rd through 5th grade, offering engaging stories, memorable characters, and opportunities to strengthen reading skills while developing a lifelong love of books.
Many of these books also make excellent read-alouds. A helpful guideline is to choose read-aloud books that are about two years above a child's independent reading level. For example, if a child is reading at a 3rd-grade level, consider selecting books from the 5th-grade list below. Listening to more advanced stories can strengthen vocabulary, increase comprehension, develop critical thinking skills, and allow children to enjoy rich literature that they may not yet be able to read on their own.
Each book includes its reading level. For example, a reading level of 4.7 indicates a book appropriate for a child in 4th grade during the 7th month of the school year. 3rd Grade Reading Level
I would encourage parents and teachers to be aware that the newer spin-off series, A to Z Animal Mysteries, contains some content that may not align with every family's values. If you choose to read these books, consider skipping certain wording during a read-aloud or using it as an opportunity for thoughtful discussion and a teachable moment.
Albie is a boy who struggles in school and often feels like he falls short of expectations. With the support of caring adults and new friendships, he begins to discover his strengths and gain confidence in himself.
Sweet Pea enjoyed this one.
4th Grade Reading Level (4.7)
Amelia Bedelia is known for taking things literally, which leads to humorous misunderstandings and unexpected adventures. The chapter book series follows her childhood experiences with school, friends, family, and problem-solving.

Ten-year-old Opal Buloni adopts a stray dog named Winn-Dixie, who helps her form friendships and connections in her new town. Through these relationships, Opal learns about forgiveness, friendship, and family. We really enjoyed this book and movie.
I would suggest almost all of Kate DiCamillo's books. They are wonderful.

These classics stories have been enjoyed for many generations. I prefer the older stories written by Stan and Jan Berenstain over the newer ones and caution the individual books that negatively display Papa Bear as the husband and father.
3rd Grade Reading Level
After being separated from their grandfather, four orphaned siblings create a home for themselves in an abandoned boxcar. As the series continues, the children solve mysteries while learning about responsibility and teamwork.
3rd-4th Grade Reading Level
Written by Sharon Creech, this story begins when a couple discovers a young boy sitting silently on their porch. As they care for him and learn more about his past, the story explores themes of family, trust, and compassion.

4th Grade Reading Level (4.0)
Set during the Great Depression, this Newbery Medal-winning novel follows ten-year-old Bud Caldwell as he searches for the father he has never known. Along the way, Bud encounters challenges, kindness, and unexpected discoveries about family and belonging.
This will forever be one of Sweet Pea's favorite books.
5th Grade Reading Level (5.0)

While I haven't read this series, others have said how much they enjoy them. Written by Mike Nawrocki, the voice of Larry on Veggie Tales, the stories provide biblical lessons with laugh-out-loud fun.

Tom and Jamie discover a hidden world where dinosaurs still exist. Each adventure brings new dinosaur encounters and challenges as the boys work to protect the creatures.
3rd-4th Grade Reading Level
The Doll family has lived in the same house for generations, carefully remaining still whenever humans are nearby. When Annabelle Doll discovers that a neighboring doll family has mysteriously disappeared, she sets out on an adventure to uncover the truth. This imaginative series combines mystery, friendship, and adventure with the wonder of dolls secretly coming to life. Peanut and I enjoyed reading this fun series together.

Pooh Bear and his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood enjoy simple adventures filled with humor and friendship. A.A. Milne's beloved stories celebrate imagination, kindness, and the joys of childhood.
4th Grade Reading Level (4.6)
August Pullman has a facial difference and is attending a mainstream school for the first time after years of being homeschooled. As Auggie, his family, and his classmates navigate the challenges of fitting in and being accepted, they learn important lessons about kindness, empathy, courage, and friendship. Written by R.J. Palacio, this novel encourages readers to choose kindness and look beyond appearances. I believe every child should read or be read this novel.
