Child looking at booksimage by jen

An adult can only read Go, Dog. Go! so many times because he or she longs for quality adult reading materials.  On Facebook I asked the ABCJLM family, "Beyond the Bible, what one book has had the biggest impact on your life?".  Intermixed among my favorites, these are the books shared.

Just for Fun Reading

Redeeming Love Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers - This is one of my absolute favorite books.  This book is loosely taken from the story of Hosea and Gomer in the Bible.  Many also suggest the other books by Francine Rivers like the Mark of the Lion series.   Personally, this series was a little too graphic for me.

Lori Wick's Sophie's Heart  Lori Wick and Janette Oke are wonderful, easy-read authors. I have enjoyed reading almost every book that each have written.  My favorites are Sophie's Heart and Roses for Mama.

Karen Kingsbury Fictional stories by Karen Kingbury - Like so many other Christian women, I have read many of Karen's books. I highly encourage you to read the Baxter Series which begins with the Redemption Series.

Not My Will Not My Will by Francena Arnold - Originally written in 1946, this is a book that few have read but all should read.  I was so excited to see that they re-released it.  I first read this book when I was in middle school and have read it several times since.  This book holds a very special place in my heart.

Terri Blackstock Restoration Series by Terri Blackstock - Last Light starts the story of life without electricity across the world.  You will never look at life the same way as this was the most powerful fictional series that I have read.

Babies & Discipline

On Becoming Baby Wise   On Becoming Baby Wise: Giving Your Infant the Gift of Nighttime Sleep by Gary Ezzo - I realize this book is controversial, but it was a huge blessing for me as scheduling worked very well for our family.  (Linked is a new version and I have not read it.)

Secrets of the Baby Whisperer   Secrets of the Baby Whisperer: How to Calm, Connect, and Communicate with Your Baby  by Tracy Hogg - This book is another "schedule" book for newborns.  I believe this book is more "baby friendly" than Baby Wise and may be better for those who do not want a stricter schedule.  I also really enjoyed the Secrets of the Baby Whisperer for Toddlers book.  It is filled with ideas for those troubling toddler years.

Parenting With Love And LogicParenting With Love And Logic by Jim Fay - Any of the "Love and Logic" books are wonderful but this one is my favorite for discipline for ages 0-6.

Have a New Kid by Friday Have a New Kid by Friday: How to Change Your Child's Attitude, Behavior & Character in 5 Days by Dr. Kevin Leman - This book is a great resource for families who are struggling to maintain control in their own home or those who need ideas for specific issues.  This is one of my top parenting books for older children.  I suggest all of the books by Dr. Kevin Leman.

Parenting Parenting by Paul Tripp - This book will radically change your view of parenting.

Praying the Scriptures For Your Children Praying the Scriptures For Your Children by Jodie Berndt - Amazing book to help you pray for your child through the use of God's Word.

The Mission of Motherhood  Sally Clarkson has wonderful books about motherhood and the mission that it holds.

Boundaries Boundaries by Cloud and Townsend - Several suggest this book as a life changer for setting healthy boundaries.

A Woman After God's Own Hear A Woman After God's Own Heart by Elizabeth George - Not one that I have read, but highly popular.

Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World by Joanna Weaver - Just as the title explains, this book will help you discover how to not let busyness rule your relationship with your Savior.

One Thousand Gifts One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp - Several have shared how this book opened their eyes to gratitude.

Lies Women Believe Lies Women Believe by Nancy Leigh DeMoss - Another one that I have not read but comes highly recommended.

Love and Respect Love and Respect by Emerson Eggerichs - Several in the ABCJLM said this book was a life changer in their marriage.

A Lifelong Love A Lifelong Love by Gary Thomas - This is my #1 marriage book recommendation.

The Meaning of Marriage The Meaning of Marriage by Tim Keller - I have not read this book but appreciate Tim Keller's wisdom.

Total Money Makeover Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey - I put this book under the "marriage" category because financial peace is so much a part of a healthy marriage.

Sheet Music Sheet Music: Uncovering the Secrets of Sexual Intimacy in Marriage by Dr. Kevin Leman - I feel every newly married couple should read this book, but all married couples could benefit.

The 5 Love Languages Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman - There are several versions of the book for marriage, parenting, and others.

Christian Life

The Pursuit of God  The Pursuit of God and other books by A.W. Tozer - Many of my favorite quotes come from A.W. Tozer.

The Purpose Driven Life  The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren - Wondering what life is all about?  This book will help you gain purpose.

Crazy Love Crazy Love by Frances Chan - You will never look at your Christian walk the same.  Very powerful!

Devotional and Quiet Time Guides

The Daily Walk Bible The Daily Walk Bible - Reading through the Bible has changed my life as well as given me a better understanding of God's Word.  I love how this Bible is divided into daily portions.  Highly recommend!

The Armor of God Armor of God by Priscilla Shirer - I have yet to read anything by Priscilla Shire that didn't rock my world.

Experiencing God Experiencing God by Henry Blackaby - I did this study in college and feel it was a pivotal part of my spiritual growth.

Rain on Me Rain on Me: Devotions of Hope and Encouragement for Difficult Times  - A 40-day devotional to help in difficult times.

A Bend in the Road A Bend in the Road: Experiencing God When Your World Caves In by Dr. David Jeremiah - This book is a wonderful help when life gives you "Interrupted Expectations."

*Please understand that with any of the books listed here, there are good and bad points to each.  Read through them with a fine-tooth comb.  Check scripture references and make sure that nothing is out of context.  No discipline technique will work for all families and all children.
