Crossing the Red Sea Craft

Crossing the Red Sea

Some children may find it confusing that the Red Sea is not filled with red water but is still referred to as the Red Sea. Help clarify this by decorating the Crossing the Red Sea worksheet. Have the child paint the water blue to represent the sea. Once dry, add a pipe cleaner to Moses' hand to depict him parting the sea.

All by Myself (Little Critter) (Look-Look)

All By Myself

All By Myself by Mercer Mayer is a charming and relatable book that follows Little Critter as he navigates the world of independence.  Throughout the story, Little Critter proudly demonstrates all the things he can do by himself—such as getting dressed, tying his shoes, and pouring juice—even if they don’t always go perfectly. This book serves as a wonderful way to celebrate the milestones of growing up and learning new skills.

Discussion

  • Talk about some of the things the child can do all by themselves, encouraging them to take joy in their independence.
  • Ask the child to think about the things they couldn’t do last year but are now able to accomplish. Celebrate this growth!
  • Discuss some tasks the child may still need help with, but that they might be able to do on their own next year. This helps foster a sense of anticipation and determination as they look forward to future achievements.

Poem: Jack and Jill

To fetch a pail of water
Jack fell down and broke his crown
And Jill came tumbling after

A child cutting play dough with scissors

Fine Motor:  Scissor Use

Instruct the child to make play dough snakes.  Then using child-safe scissors, cut the play dough snake allowing the child to focus solely on closing and opening the blades. Be sure that the child's elbow stays next to their body and that the thumb is on top.

For a little more difficulty, have the child cut drinking straws.

Child in a tunnel for an obstacle course

Gross Motor:  Obstacle Course

Create a fun obstacle course that will challenge the child’s physical and problem-solving skills. Set up different stations using household items to encourage movement and critical thinking.

Obstacle Course Ideas:

Crawling Tunnel: Place a large blanket or tarp over two chairs to create a tunnel for the child to crawl through.

Jumping Station: Set out pillows or small cushions for the child to jump between, pretending they are hopping over water or lava.

Balancing Line: Lay a piece of string or tape on the floor and challenge the child to walk across it while keeping their balance.

Object Carry: Provide a lightweight object for the child to carry from one point to another without dropping it, promoting focus and coordination.

Ball Toss: Set up a basket or container and have the child throw a soft ball or rolled-up socks into it, aiming for the target.

Encourage the child to complete the obstacle course as fast as they can or add variety by timing each round and encouraging them to improve their speed or balance. This playful activity enhances gross motor skills, coordination, and spatial awareness while providing an enjoyable challenge.
