Hot Cross Buns

Hot Cross Buns

Hot cross buns are a traditional Easter treat, symbolizing the crucifixion of Jesus with a cross on top of each bun. The spices in the buns can represent the spices used to prepare Jesus' body for burial, making these buns a tasty way to tell the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection.

Simple Hot Cross Buns Recipe (Using Refrigerator or Freezer Bread):

  • Thaw or prepare refrigerator or freezer bread dough.
  • Roll into small balls and place them on a greased baking sheet.
  • Let rise as directed, then bake according to package instructions.
  • Once cooled, use icing to draw a cross on top of each bun.

Several yeast recipes are available, but this Hot Cross Buns recipe is our favorite.

Resurrection Rolls

Resurrection Rolls

Make a simple snack where a marshmallow (representing Jesus) is placed in dough (the tomb) and baked. When opened, the marshmallow is gone, symbolizing Jesus’ empty tomb.

Easter Story Cookies

While meringue-based Resurrection Cookies may not be the tastiest, I love their meaningful illustration of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. The hollow center of each cookie beautifully represents the empty tomb, making them a sweet reminder of the hope we have in Christ.

Bird Nest Cookies

Bird Nest Cookies

Birds and eggs are often used by Christians during Easter because they symbolize new life, much like Jesus' resurrection. Just as a chick hatches from an egg, Jesus re-emerged from the tomb, representing rebirth and hope after death. These bird's nest cookies are both delicious and easy for kids to make with minimal assistance!
