Dave and the Giant Pickle is a fun, animated retelling of the biblical story of David and Goliath. In this version, a small shepherd named Dave faces a towering bully named Goliath the pickle, teaching children that courage and faith matter more than size or strength. Just like the account in the Book of 1 Samuel, the story shows that with trust in God, even the biggest giants can be overcome.
This radio drama of David and Goliath was a favorite Adventures in Odyssey episode of my elementary-age children. Included in the Bible Eyewitness Collector's Set, Connie travels in the Imagination Station to meet David and see God's power through a willing heart.
Shorten the verses as appropriate for the child's developmental level.

Paint five small stones. Let dry and add the words from the verse to the stones.
Stone #1 - I can do
Stone #2 - all things
Stone #3 - through Christ
Stone #4 - who strengthens
Stone #5 - me.

Measure butcher block or wrapping paper 9 feet long. Draw the outline of Goliath. Add details. Have the child lay down on the paper and compare his/her size to Goliath's.

Give the child five small stones (or crumpled paper balls). Count them together and place them into a small bag (or cup) just like David did.
Place various objects in a pile. Have the child sort them into “big” (Goliath) and “small” (David) groups.

Cut out large paper footprints and tape them to the floor. Let children jump from footprint to footprint like “giant steps.”

Provide play helmets, vests, and shields. Let children try on “armor” and talk about how David chose not to wear heavy armor.

Take a walk like David and collect five stones.
